Superior Health Foundation Announces Over $270,000 In Grants for EMS Training, Maternal Infant Health, Healthy Food Access and More

Marquette, MI – The Superior Health Foundation Board of Directors approved 13 new grants totaling $271,549 aimed at improving health across the Upper Peninsula. These investments will support a variety of projects ranging from EMS training programs to support for pregnant and post-partum women who have experienced trauma. “Our Fall Grants program is designed to make a meaningful impact on health across the UP,” said Superior Health Foundation CEO Megan Murphy. “By targeting health disparities and improving access, these grants aim to enhance well-being for every Yooper in our region.”

In Gogebic County, Gogebic Community College received a grant to enhance EMS offerings in its service area, which includes Ontonagon County. The grant will reduce EMS student travel cost barriers by providing local training lab opportunities, which are currently only offered in Ironwood. This project aims to reduce the cost of EMS education while helping place more EMS providers in high-need regions in the Western U.P.

A grant to the City of Marquette will train more instructors in the Asahi Nordic’s Fall Prevention Program in Marquette, Baraga, and Houghton Counties, increasing the number of older adults with access to the program. Local health needs surveys, such as the UP Wide Community Health Needs Assessment, have identified a lack of programs and services in the U.P. to help older adults maintain their health and independence.

Additionally, SHF has granted over $205,000 in grants earlier this year, including $122,000 in the Spring Grants program, $57,000 in the Indigent Care program, $20,000 in equipment grants, and $6,000 in Pilot Project grants. The Foundation has also provided $3,000 in Breast Health Fund support to individuals across the UP. These newest awards bring SHF’s total giving to over $475,000 in 2024. “Our 2024 grants reflect our unwavering commitment to addressing the most pressing health needs in our community,” said Sara Giles, Board President of the Superior Health Foundation. “These grants are not just investments in healthcare – they are investments in the future of every individual we serve, ensuring that essential services and support are accessible to all.”
